CRAFT BEYOND MEMORY

Across the Himalayas, craft survives as memory, displaced from daily life and reduced to nostalgia or seasonal display. Champawat holds a deep lineage of stone masonry, Likhai woodwork, bamboo work, weaving, steel utensil making and Aipan art, yet its recent growth has turned to generic concrete construction that ignores terrain and local building cultures. The project asks whether architecture can be a craft in its own right, one that revives the practices, economies and relationships it emerges from.

Set along the Champawat–Pithoragarh highway and overlooking a deodar forest, the site sits on a busy transit and tourist route. The surrounding settlement has grown by negotiating the slope rather than flattening it. Buildings rest on stone plinths, movement unfolds through steps, and open spaces appear where people pause. The design follows this logic, tracing the land’s contours, minimising excavation and treating every change in level as a spatial opportunity.
