Inside the Shed
REIMAGINING INDUSTRIAL ARCHITECTURE THROUGH PASSIVE VENTILATION, THERMAL COMFORT AND WORKER-CENTRIC DESIGN WITHIN A HIGHLY FUNCTIONAL FACTORY SHED
FUNCTION DRIVES THE FORM
Designed for a plastic sheet manufacturing plant, the shed integrates machinery, production workflows and a dust-controlled working environment within an efficient industrial layout. The design balances the client's functional requirements with the need for a comfortable and healthier workspace.
SHAFTS THAT CREATE PASSIVE VENTILATION
Strategically positioned ventilation shafts function as solar chimneys, using temperature differences and the stack effect to create high and low pressure zones that draw hot air upwards and encourage continuous airflow. Detailed calculations informed the dimensions, placement and sizing of shafts and windows to achieve the required air changes for heat-intensive, heavy-duty plastic sheet production. The shafts also shield the building from harsh south-western sun, reducing internal heat buildup while maximising natural ventilation and thermal comfort.
COMFORT BEYOND MACHINERY
Prioritising worker wellbeing, the ventilation strategy aims to maintain interiors 3–4°C cooler through continuous air exchange. Dedicated machine exhausts dissipate process heat, while mechanical fresh-air inlets support a dust-controlled environment. Long windows connect workers to the outdoors, transforming a utilitarian factory into a more humane workplace.
