Khar Comedy Club

The entry sets the tone for what lies beyond. Posters, a waiting bench and a narrowing passage create a gradual shift from the chaos of the street to the intimacy of the performance space, a small transition that builds anticipation before the show begins. KCC is the brainchild of stand-up comedian Sumit Sourav and performer Prerna Kothari, who set out to revive a much-loved underground comedy club in a new avatar.

Inside, the design draws on Mumbai's Art Deco heritage without recreating it literally. Arches, geometric patterns and a palette of deep reds and greens give the club a memorable backdrop. Within the twelve-foot-high volume, a lightweight suspended metal loft houses the technical controls and overlooks the stage. Acoustics, lighting and automation work together, so the space can host everything from open mics to intimate gigs and experimental performances, bringing audience and performer closer.

Beside the stage, pivoted partitions give the same set of panels two roles. By day they present full-height mirrors for dance practice, and by night a geometric, Art Deco-inspired composition that complements the performance space. There is no additional footprint and no elaborate transformation, only a change in orientation that changes the room.

More than a venue, KCC gives people a reason to return, a stage to try something new and a community to be part of. From established comedians to first-time performers, it makes room for different voices, formats and ideas to share the same space.
