Kharadi Junction
A ROAD SAFETY AND JUNCTION REDESIGN INITIATIVE THAT IMPROVES PEDESTRIAN ACCESSIBILITY, STREAMLINES MULTI-MODAL MOVEMENT AND CREATES SAFER TRAFFIC MOVEMENT THROUGH TACTICAL URBANISM
The Kharadi Bypass Junction faced significant road safety and mobility challenges due to its wide intersection geometry and high traffic volumes. The absence of dedicated pedestrian signals and safe crossing facilities, along with crossing distances exceeding 50 metres on the Wagholi approach, made pedestrian movement particularly hazardous.
A series of observational, qualitative and quantitative assessments were undertaken to understand the existing conditions and mobility patterns at Vaiduwadi Junction. The findings highlighted the need to reorganise intersection geometry, streamline traffic movement and create safer, continuous pedestrian spaces while addressing the needs of different road users.
Tactical design proposal
The proposed design reorganises Kharadi Bypass Junction through revised median geometry, dedicated pedestrian and cyclist crossings, refuge islands and designated zones for intermediate public transport. It introduces formalised auto and taxi pick-up areas, bus bays, multi-utility zones and traffic-calming measures, supported by clear road markings and signage. The proposal aims to reduce pedestrian crossing distances, improve lane discipline and streamline multi-modal movement while enhancing safety for all road users.
