Hydrology study
Sembakkam Lake, also known as Hastinapuram Lake, is an urban wetland forming part of the Pallikaranai watershed basin. Located amidst a rapidly urbanising landscape, the lake extends across Sembakkam, Pallavaram and Chitlapakkam. Its hydrological assessment focused on understanding the catchment and its connections to surrounding water bodies through a network of inlets and outlets. The study examined drainage patterns, sewage inflows and potential flood risks to identify interventions for improving water quality, restoring natural drainage and enhancing the lake’s water-retention capacity.
Ecological restoration and lakefront revival
The masterplan addresses lake degradation through sewage treatment and inlet rehabilitation while restoring water storage and natural habitats. It transforms inaccessible bund edges into safer public spaces with native landscaping and ecological buffers. Walking trails, birdwatching areas and community spaces reconnect the lake with its neighbourhood while protecting its biodiversity.
